It just goes to show that Dwayne Johnson really is box office gold.
2002 movie Spider-Man, directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire in the lead role, is no longer Sony Pictures’ highest grossing movie at the domestic box office. Deadline reports that the title now belongs to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.
Spider-Man has been a highly profitable franchise for Sony, with the first having made $403,706,375 for the studio domestically while Spider-Man2, Spider-Man 3 and the recent Spider-Man: Homecoming are Sony’s third, fourth and fifth highest grossing movies ever, respectively, in the domestic box office (via Box Office Mojo).
Worldwide, Jumanji’s figures are also impressive. At $950,769, 063, it is Sony’s second highest grossing movie in the box office worldwide behind Skyfall, which crossed the $1 billion.
2017 has proven to be a big year for Sony, with other box office hits including the aforementioned Spider-Man: Homecoming as well as Baby Driver and The Emoji Movie.
Could Dwayne Johnson’s next movie, Rampage, which is due out in cinemas later this week, do as well? It’s hard to say. After all, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle had a number of factors going for it, with positive reviews, family appeal, inspiration from a 90s classic, the casting of Kevin Hart (who’s super popular Stateside) as well as being released initially Christmastime.
