As we reported earlier this week, Johnny Depp is set to appear in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them as Gellert Grindelwald.
For those that may be unfamiliar with the lore, Grindelwald was a wizard with whom Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts, was involved with. Grindelwald was considered one of the greatest dark wizards in the world, only surpassed by Voldemort and was considered extremely dangerous.
More pointedly, however, was that Dumbledore was supposedly infatuated with Grindelwald and even fell in love with him, though Grindelwald didn't reciprocate the feelings. Rowling's spoken before about Dumbledore's sexuality and, when asked by Variety about the topic of Dumbledore in upcoming sequels of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, the question of that relationship came up.
"I would like to say because this is obviously a five-part story, there’s lots to unpack in that relationship. You will see Dumbledore as a younger man and quite a troubled man,” Rowling explained to Variety. "We’ll see him at that formative period of his life. As far as his sexuality is concerned... watch this space."
Rowling has penned the script for Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them and it's entirely possible that she'll be involved - if not writing - the screenplay for the sequels to follow. Rowling confirmed in the same interview that she's already begun work on the screenplay for the second film. Therefore, it seems very possible that Dumbledore's relationship with Grindelwald will be explored, as she said so herself.
