Irish actress Gemma-Leah Devereux has landed the role of Liza Minnelli in Judy, the upcoming biopic from BBC about Judy Garland.

Devereux, whose credits include The Tudors, Get Up and Go, Dartmoor Killing and Cardboard Gangsters, will star opposite Renee Zellweger in the title role.

A first look at Zellweger playing Garland was revealed last week.

Another Irish actress who has been cast is Kerry actress Jessie Buckley (Taboo, War & Peace, The Last Post). She will play Rosalyn Wilder, Garland’s production assistant.

The film also stars Rufus Sewell, Jessie Buckley, Finn Wittrock and Michael Gambon.

Devereux told IFTN: “I am over the moon to be playing the iconic Liza Minnelli. Being directed by the very talented Rupert Goold and to be play opposite Renee Zellweger is every actress’s dream.

“The day my agent called to say I got the part I had just watched Discovering: Judy Garland on Sky Arts. I took it as a good sign. This is a very exciting chapter in my career. I have grown up watching Liza with a "Z" and I feel honoured to be playing her.”

Judy is currently being shot in England.
