The movies in the cinema at the moment are almost all summer blockbusters but the trailers being released are getting us hyped for Oscar season, which comes later. A new trailer which has just been dropped sees ‘Rogue One’ star Felicity Jones transform into a young version of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in ‘On the Basis of Sex.’
‘Call Me By Your Name’s Armie Hammer, Justin Theroux, Sam Waterson, Kathy Bates and Jack Reynor co-star.
British actress Jones adapts a Brooklyn-inflected accent for the film, which deals with one of the lawyer’s earliest cases, Weinberger v. Wiesenfeld. Ginsburg successfully argued before the Supreme Court in 1975 that a widower denied his wife’s survivor benefits under Social Security violated the right to equal protection secured by the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution.
Ginsberg’s husband Marty, played by Hammer, was a key support in the ground-breaking case.
Felicity Jones previously earned an Oscar nomination for her performance in Stephen Hawking biopic ‘The Theory of Everything.’ Natalie Portman was originally attached to the role of Ginsburg.
Mimi Leder, who is known for directing episodes of ‘The Leftovers,’ ‘Shameless’ and ‘ER,’ is directing the script from Daniel Stiepleman.
The feature opens in the US on December 25th 2018 in line with Justice Ginsburg’s 25th anniversary on the Supreme Court. We’d expect the film to hit Irish cinemas in early 2019.
Also competing for the Best Actress Oscar nod is Keira Knightley, as evidenced from the trailer for her new film ‘Colette.’
