Despite somewhat lacklustre reviews, Fast & Furious 8 is on track to have the biggest opening weekend of all time.
Estimates put the eighth instalment of the franchise at somewhere in the region of $532 million, which would put it $30,000,000 ahead of Star Wars: The Force Awakens' opening weekend of $529 million. In the US alone, Fast and Furious 8 is expected to drive home with just over $100 million, which would make for a drop of $47 million compared to the previous film.
There's also a noticeable difference in reviews for both films, too. Furious 7 has a Metacritic rating of 67%, whilst Fate of the Furious currently has a Metacritic rating of 56%. However, its CinemaScore - which track audience approval ratings after the film - has the film at 88%, just one percent lower than Furious 7.
Here in Ireland, figures will likely be released on Tuesday, but it's a safe bet that Fate of the Furious topped the weekend box office here as well.
