We've been following the reboot of Escape From New York for quite some time now, and while it's still a while away yet from screens, it looks like things are moving in the right direction.
The last bit of news came in March when it was confirmed that none other than Robert Rodriguez had signed on to direct with a script from Luther showrunner Neil Cross making the final cut. In an interview with Deadline that went online in the past few hours, Cross offered another update on the reboot's status.
By all accounts, it looks like it's still active as the screenplay has passed one hurdle - John Carpenter has read it, and signed off on it. "One of the most terrifying sentences I’ve ever heard in my life is ‘we’ve given the script to John Carpenter’. I crawled around for three days thinking ‘oh my god’ but we got John Carpenter’s seal of approval. He approved it and that’s all I need," said Cross.
There's still no word yet on who'll be playing Snake Plissken or if that leaked script we reported on previously was accurate, nor is there any word on a confirmed release date. Still, 'Ol JC giving it the thumbs up is a good sign. Previously, Carpenter was somewhat ambivalent about whether or not he liked the screenplay (and told us as much), but it's likely that that script he saw was a previous draft.
Either way, a remake of Escape From New York - especially in today's climate - might just be what's needed.
