It's hard not to get swept up in the excitement surrounding The Force Awakens, isn't it?
Sure, we've been harping on about for so long and, yes, the trailers for it have all been very strong. However, the real reason for this excitement is because it's been so long since we've seen a new Star Wars film - and one that captures the imagination in the same way as the original trilogy.
Lucasfilm, likewise, knows this and has already put two spin-off films into production. However, if recent reports are to be believed, this is just the beginning. According to a feature by Wired, Lucasfilm and Disney are planning to turn Star Wars into an 'infinite series', meaning that it'll run until people stop watching and it becomes unprofitable for them to continue.
When you look at how successful the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been for Disney, it should come as no surprise that they're trying this tactic with Star Wars. For one, it has just as many - if not more - fans than Marvel did when it started. Plus, there's at least two generations of audiences who know Star Wars and want to see more of it.
Some fans would argue that it's losing something intrinsic by turning them out each and every year. In a sense, they're right. One of the things that made Star Wars so special was that it was, in a sense, quite rare. Before the prequels, there was no TV series (we don't count Caravan of Courage and the Holiday Special) and the idea of making more movies seemed unlikely.
When the prequels arrived on the scene, it ruined some of the mystique that surrounded Star Wars. It's an interesting time, to say the least, and a lot will be revealed once The Force Awakens has settled in the cinema.
So, our question is this - are you happy with a Star Wars film every year or is it overkill? Let us know in the comments and vote in our poll!
