Despite near-universal praise, two of the most recognisable actors working today, a director with a string of commercial and critical hits, and the prospect of a sequel to a defining sci-fi masterpiece, Blade Runner 2049 has had a disappointing run at the box office.

According to figures from BoxOfficeMojo, Blade Runner 2049 has only just now surpassed its production budget of $150 million after close to three weeks on release. Together with its US and global totals, Blade Runner 2049 has made $169,585,977 so far.

Blade Runner 2049's box office woes are likely to be compounded by the fact that Warner Bros. is reducing the film's run in US cinemas as it paves the way for Justice League on November 17th. Not only that, the ponderous sci-fi film will soon have to go up against Marvel's crowd-pleasing action comedy Thor: Ragnarok, which is currently tracking to open somewhere in the region of $100 million on its opening weekend - if not higher.

Meanwhile, here in Ireland, Blade Runner 2049 held the No.1 spot at the box office for just one week and was quickly toppled the following week by LEGO Ninjago Movie.
