It’s Friday the 13th people, and what better way to bring in the spooky, suspicious holiday than watching some scary movies.

The 70s, 80s and 90s all have their classics but there have been some brilliant horror films in more recent years too.

Here are ten you might have missed. How many have you seen?

 

Let the Right One In

This Swedish romantic horror alternates between moving you to tears and scaring the living daylights out of you. It tells the story of a lonely boy named Oskar who befriends a little girl named Eli who is actually a vampire.

 

Raw

Prepare to watch a cannibal movie unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Raw follows a vegetarian vet student who upon trying meat for the first time, hungers for human flesh.

 

The Witch

Starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Ineson, The Witch, or VVitch, follows the mysterious happenings to a Puritan family living in 1630s New England. It won a bunch of awards and made $40 million against a $4 million when it was released in 2015.

 

Green Room

Anton Yelchin and Patrick Stewart star in this crazy, messed up horror. A punk band becomes the victims of a gang of neo-Nazi skinheads.

 

It Follows

Never has a supernatural presence been as terrifyingly enigmatic as, well, It. It Follows is the kind of movie you’re best going in to knowing nothing at all so we won’t give you a plot summary, but will leave you with this gif of an old lady.

 

It Comes At Night

Plot wise – being about a family that retreats to the woods when a contagion breaks out across the world – It Comes At Night doesn’t sound all that original but it’s full of twists and turns and will undoubtedly give you the creeps. It’s got a great cast too between Joel Edgerton, Christopher Abbott, Carmen Ejogo, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Riley Keough.

 

Under the Skin

As much a sci fi movie as it is a horror, Under the Skin totally tanked at the box office in spite of great reviews and one of Scarlett Johansson’s career best performances. She plays an alien who preys on men in Scotland.

 

The Guest

You’ll never look at Dan Stevens – best-known for Downton Abbey and Beauty and the Beast – the same again. Here he plays a mannerly soldier who becomes increasingly violent to protect the family he is staying with.

 

Mama

If you loved last year’s hit horror It (which we haven’t included here as you probably have seen it), you should check out the movie that got director Andy Muschietti the gig. Jessica Chastain and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau play a couple who take in their two nieces only to discover some supernatural being has come along with them.

 

Train to Busan

Combine a zombie apocalypse with a thrilling train ride and you end up with the adrenaline rush experience that is Train to Busan. The South Korean movie currently holds a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
