Given the current state of things with regards to the pandemic and the US cinema market, this shouldn't come as a huge surprise.
Warner Bros. has confirmed that it's moving the release date of 'Wonder Woman 1984' back to December 25th. In a statement sent to Variety late last night, director Patty Jenkins explained that "(because) I know how important it is to bring this movie to you on a big screen when all of us can share the experience together, I’m hopeful you won’t mind waiting just a little bit longer. With the new date on Christmas Day, we can’t wait to spend the holidays with you!"
'Wonder Woman 1984' was expected to move on from its October 2nd release, as Christopher Nolan's 'Tenet' - another Warner Bros. movie - had an underwhelming first weekend at the US box office. Variety's sources believed Warner Bros. was waiting to see how 'Tenet' performed before making a decision on moving 'Wonder Woman 1984' to Christmas.
Interestingly, the release date for 'Dune' is still locked in for December 18th, just one week before the new release date of 'Wonder Woman 1984'. With a production price-tag of $180 million for it, Warner Bros. are keen to ensure it gets the best possible chance to make its money back.
