There are some things in life that are inevitable, and one of those things was the huge opening weekend of subpar comic book adaptation X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which bowed to $87 million, despite so so reviews and the entire film leaking online a month before the actual release date. Last year on the same day Iron Man opened to a mammoth $102 million, which was seen as somewhat of a surprise, despite extremely strong reviews - as it didn't have the luxury of an already popular series behind it. Matthew McConaughey's latest laugh riot The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past did solid counter programming numbers, bringing in $15.3 million and taking second spot. Next week sees the launch of Star Trek, which has already been bagging fantastic reviews and a euphoric online response. Trek should open big, and show strong legs, becoming another big winner for Paramount.
