Ray Winstone will replace Robert De Niro in Edge of Darkness, starring alongside Mel Gibson in the Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) -directed drama, after De Niro pulled out on account of that old chestnut "creative differences". According to Variety, Winstone is negotiating to play an operative sent to clean up evidence in the murder of a woman. Gibson plays her detective father, who wants answers after his daughter is clipped on his doorstep. When he investigates, he uncovers all sorts of unscrupulous behaviour that goes deeper than he could ever imagine. The departure of De Niro has taken a little of the shine off Gibson's elongated return to acting, but this film is still sounding like a thriller with promise.
