Where The Wilds Things Are was a surprise smash at the American box-office this passing weekend, coining a huge $32.5 million. The Spike Jonze helmed children's book adaptation was seen as a bit of a tough sell, with its quirky, but brilliant trailer very much marketing it as a Jonze joint. But audiences have responded, giving Jonze easily the biggest hit of his career so far. Elsewhere, there was a close fought race for second place as the Gerard Butler/Jamie Foxx thriller Law Abiding Citizen finished the weekend with a respectable $21.3 million, while the stunning success of the $15,000 indie Paranormal Activity continued, as it bagged a further $20.2 million, to give it an early cume of $33.7 million. Remake The Stepfather also opened, taking a so-so $12.3 million. Expect Paranormal Activity to hang around the charts for a long time and do Blair Witch style business.
