It's been one of the most popular musicals of all-time, grossing close to FOUR BILLION throughout its global run, and now it's finally coming to the big screen.

Wicked, which is an alternative retelling of the Wizard Of Oz from the viewpoint of the witches of Oz, has become a success story for musicals and even managed to rake in just over $1,000,000,000 on Broadway alone. A film adaptation has been mooted for quite some time, but it now appears that Decemeber 20th, 2019 will be the release date for it.

No cast have been announced as of yet, however original writer Winnie Holzman and composer Steven Schwartz have been both signed on to work on the adaptation whilst Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry has signed on to direct. Kristen Chenoweth and Idina Menzel from Frozen both played significant roles in Wicked during its initial run and it's expected they'll return here.

The release date puts Wicked squarely up against another fairytale film from Disney which has yet to be revealed. December 19th and 20th has always been a key date in cinemas, as it was both the release date for Avatar and Star Wars: The Force Awakens in recent years.
