When we interviewed John Landis shortly after The Mummy opened, the veteran director assiduously pointed out that putting Tom Cruise in the middle of a monster film wasn't going to help its cause.
If anything, Landis argued, it wasn't "gonna be The Mummy, it's going to be the Tom Cruise Show." That's one of the points Honest Trailers picks up on; that and the fact that Alex Kurtzmann is the guy you call when you want a pre-packaged shared universe and can churn studio notes into a screenplay.
Not only that, they also picked up on the very clear rip-offs from An American Werewolf In London and the fact that the film really talks down to the audience throughout.
Take a look.
