Back when we announced that a Jem & The Holograms live-action film was being made, there was a flurry of excitement.

Who didn't love Jem? It was essential '80s cheese, complete with its synthpop opening theme and really overt product placement for their toys. We didn't care - it was the '80s and nobody knew what that was.

This take, however, has it set in contemporary times and follows a young girl who's catapulted into the spotlight when she becomes a viral video sensation. She and her three sisters set off in a "one-in-a-million journey" that sees them become international stars.

There's also a robot in there for some reason.

Was there a robot in the original one? We can't remember. Answers on a postcard, please.

So, thoughts on all of this? We were hoping for plenty of nostalgia, bad hairdos and neon with Jem & The Holograms, but instead we're essentially getting Hannah Montana with robots and Juliette Lewis.

That's fine and all, but where's the catchy theme tune? This just sounds that radio station that you skip over constantly when your phone is flat.

Jem & The Holograms is due in Irish cinemas in late 2015.
