The first trailer for Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit has landed online. The timing of this is a bit unfortunate with the character's author, Tom Clancy, passing away the other day.

Chris Pine plays Jack Ryan, a young CIA analyst who's sent to Moscow to investigate a Russian oligarch played by Kenneth Branagh. Branagh, it turns out, is also directing the movie as well. While in Moscow, it becomes clear that Branagh's character is into some serious financial badness and plans to sink the US economy.

First thoughts on the trailer? There is a serious bang of Daniel Craig's version of James Bond off this. The bit in the toilet when he smashes your man's head off the sink? Remind you of Casino Royale? We know that studios have been trying to get an American James Bond off the ground for years. The Bourne Identity's age is starting to show and since The Bourne Legacy didn't exactly dazzle audiences, they're eager for a hit.

It could - repeat, COULD - be very interesting. Chris Pine's a decent actor and he excels at the dashing action star bit. Branagh, we're not so sure. He's a fine thespian, but as a Russian oligarch? They're trying to recreate Alan Rickman / Hans Gruber and it comes off looking like a cheap copy. Kevin Costner's a safe choice and it's great to see him back on form and on our cinema screens. Personally, I think he was the best thing in Man of Steel.
