Layer Cake and Stardust director Matthew Vaughn has found $30 million to fund a production of the comic Kick-Ass. Apparently the content is so violent that studio’s balked at funding the film, causing the hugely talented helmer to raise the clams himself. The story follows high school geek Dave Lizewski who attempts to reinvent himself as a real-world costumed superhero named Kick-Ass who seems doomed to failure because he's not athletic or coordinated. Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who everyone knows as loves as McLovin’ in the hilarious Superbad, will play a 12 year old character called Red Mist who whips folks heads off with a samurai sword. It sounds absolutely mental, but Vaughn has got genuine ability as a director and I wouldn’t bet against him pulling this one off.
