Like it or not, the Top Gun sequel is getting ready to turn and burn.

Deadline reports that a release date has been set for July 12th, 2019 with Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski confirmed to take over from Tony Scott following his unfortunate passing in 2012.

Screenplay-wise, there's a number of names involved.

Peter Craig (The Town), Justin Marks (live-action Jungle Book), and Ashley Miller & Zack Stentz (Fringe, X-Men: First Class) have signed up to write the script and crack the story. As well as confirming the release date, Deadline also has a few lines on the plot and it's about what you'd expect. As they tell it, Maverick is now an instructor in the Fighter Weapons School who's leading a new class of fighter pilots in their training.

A Top Gun sequel might not seem like a good idea, but there's a certain feeling that Tom Cruise's starpower is beginning to wane and that this is a move to remind audiences of what he can. His latest film, The Mummy, currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 15% and failed to make waves in the box office. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, meanwhile, only hit 37% on Rotten Tomatoes.

In other words, Tom Cruise desperately needs a hit - and going back to the well might just be the thing he needs. The question is, does anyone really want a Top Gun sequel?
