Tobey Maguire's scenes have been cut from the final version of the Life of Pi due to the actor being 'too famous'.

It was confirmed yesterday that The Spiderman actor had been scrapped from the film with reports thats Maguire's scene just 'wasn't working' in the movie'. Director Ang Lee was worried that casting Maguire in the role would overshadow the other relatively unknown actors in the film. In a statement about the decision Lee said 'To be consistent with the other casting choices made for the film, I decided to go with an entirely international cast, 'I very much admire Tobey and look forward to working with him again in the future'

Maguire was set to play the role of 'Life of Pi' author Yann Martel which has since been filmed by Prometheus actor Rafe Spall. Tobey has spoke out since saying there was no hard feelings about the decision ' I fully support Ang's decision to go a different direction for this role in Life of Pi. Ang shared a lot of the film with me, and what I saw was absolutely beautiful'.

Maguire need not feel alone as he is not the only actor to have been binned from films this year, Uma Thurman was cut from Savages where as Rachel Weisz, Amanda Peet , Michael sheen were all cut from Terrence Malick's 'To the Wonder'.

Life of Pi is based on the best selling novel of the same name and follows a young man who is the only survivor of a shipwreck. The film is released in Ireland on the 21st December.
