James Gunn's take on 'Suicide Squad' - 'The Suicide Squad' - won't be a sequel to the 2016 movie, as originally believed.
Producer Peter Safran told Joblo that the sequel is a "total reboot". Thus it shouldn't be referred to as 'Suicide Squad 2'.
According to Safran:
"First of all, we don't call it Suicide Squad 2 'cause it's a total reboot, so it's The Suicide Squad and I think people should be extremely excited about it."
James Gunn, the writer and director of the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' movies, who was recently re-instated for Vol. 3, will write and direct 'The Suicide Squad'.
"It's everything you would hope from a James Gunn script and I think that says a lot and that promises a lot and I know that we will deliver a lot."
Because he is directing both 'The Suicide Squad' and GOTG 3, Gunn is now directing (or gunning, if you will) for both DC and Marvel - superhero movie competitors and sworn enemies.
However, Safran said:
"There's room for everybody and certainly that which unites us all is far greater than that which divides us, so hopefully they'll see that you can be both a Marvel and a DC fan and the world won't spin off its axis."
"It was all handled incredibly elegantly and everybody knows on both sides that Suicide Squad is the priority today and he’ll finish that movie and then everybody knows that his next film will be Guardians. It’s the best of all possible both worlds, I think, for fans and for James Gunn himself."
Little has been revealed about the "total reboot" of 'The Suicide Squad'. We do know that Idris Elba will play Deadshot in it, taking over the role from Will Smith.
The 2016 Suicide Squad received mixed to negative reviews, but made a killing at the box office. It also won an Oscar for Makeup and Hairstyling.
'The Suicide Squad' hits theatres in August 2021.
There's no release date yet for 'Guardians of the Galaxy 3'.
