British actor Idris Elba is fast making a name for himself as a credible leading man in Hollywood, so the news that he'll star in a new Alex Cross movie, replacing Morgan Freeman, should really surprise few.

Cross is the main character in a series of novels from James Patterson; two of which were previously turned into movies starring Freeman - Kiss The Girls and Along Came A Spider. Both were fairly mediocre affairs (the latter was on TV just last night), but writer/director David Twohy aims to change all that with his new take on the series. Him being the man behind Pitch Black, and the (had its moments) more recent The Getaway, we can probably expect something a little darker than the strangely congenial Freeman efforts.

Elba, of course, starred in the as-good-as-you've-heard HBO series The Wire, for a few seasons, and popped up more recently in Obsessed and The Losers; the former a solid box-office performer.
