If nothing else, 'The 355' does exactly what every other middle-of-the-road spy thriller with men does, in telling you the entire plot in the trailer.
You can actually see the movie coming together in this trailer; that's how much of it looks familiar. Jessica Chastain plays Mason 'Mace' Brown, a wildcard CIA agent (that's all in the movie's official description) who is given the go-ahead by her agency to strike out on her own to take on a mission.
For that, she'll need to recruit other agents from around the world - a computer hacker from MI6, played by Lupita Nyong'o. An equally tough German agent, played by Diane Kruger. Penelope Cruz is "a normal woman", by her own words in the trailer, and then there's "a mysterious woman", played by Bingbing Fan. What are they after, you ask? Something dangerous that's going to cause World War III. High stakes!
The screenplay is written by 'X-Men' impresario Simon Kinberg and Theresa Rebeck, who previously worked on - get this - 'Harriet the Spy' and 'Catwoman'. If you're looking for a big dumb action movie that just happens to have an all-female lead cast, then 'The 355' is all your very specific prayers answered.
The release date is set for January 15th, but the likelihood is that will probably change. In the meantime, here's the trailer.
