Super 8 opened bigger than expected at the American box office this passing weekend, as the apparently modestly budgeted JJ Abrams film took in just over $37 million in its first few days; enough to give it top spot.  

Hollywood had been tracking the release, and the well-reviewed flick was projected to gross between $25-$30 million. The opening is seen as a huge success and given the reviews, word of mouth should be strong and see a good hold over the coming weeks.

X-Men: First Class enjoyed a strong second week as well, and should pass the $100 million mark at some point today. Next week sees the launch of Ryan Reynolds starrer, The Green Lantern
