Steven Spielberg has both multi-Oscar nominee The Post and sci fi spectacular Ready Player One coming out this year but his new project is totally, utterly different.
Reports have it that the director is remaking the hit Broadway musical West Side Story. With music and lyrics by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, West Side Story was brilliantly brought to the big screen by Robert Wise and Jerome Roberts in 1961, winning 10 Oscars that year, including Best Picture.
Spielberg will be teaming up with famed screenwriter Tony Kushner, who he has previously worked with on Munich and Lincoln, for the feature. He’s also working with 20th Century Fox but further details remain under wraps.
A casting call was recently released, seeking actors to fill in the key principal roles of Tony, Maria, Anita, and Bernardo. The announcement explicitly asks for Latino actors to audition for the latter three.
