Horror movie It may have proven to be one of the big movie hits of the year thus far but another Stephen King adaptation, The Dark Tower, proved to be much less successful both with critics and in the box office, having made $110m off a $60m budget.

The film, which stars Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, sees a tower which is at the centre of the universe and protects various worlds from evil, come under threat from a Man in Black (McConaughey). Elba plays Roland, the last gunslinger, who teams up with a young boy from Earth in order to stop the Man.

The original author of the series on which The Dark Tower is based, King, has now in a new interview with Vulture pinpointed where he thinks the movie stumbled.

King essentially reiterated the two main complaints the movie had with critics as he commented: “The major challenge was to do a film based on a series of books that’s really long, about 3,000 pages. The other part of it was the decision to do a PG-13 feature adaptation of books that are extremely violent and deal with violent behaviour in a fairly graphic way.”

He continued: “That was something that had to be overcome, although I’ve gotta say, I thought [screenwriter] Akiva Goldsman did a terrific job in taking a central part of the book and turning it into what I thought was a pretty good movie.”

King added that the planned TV series of The Dark Tower, that was set to accompany the movie, now looks like it’ll be “a complete reboot.”
