It was another cracking weekend at the box-office for M. Night Shyamalan, as his horror/thriller Split showed seriously strong legs to hold the top spot in the US.

Horror flicks normally have huge drops week-to-week, but word of mouth for this one is building because (a) It’s a really fun film with a cracking lead performance from James McAvoy and (b) That ending almost had us jumping out of our seats with joy. Seriously… everyone go see it so we can actually talk about it.

Split took a further $26.2 million over the weekend, a slight drop of 34% that took its total to just under $80 million. When all is said and done it could be one of the most profitable films of the year for Universal Pictures – it cost just $9 million to make.

Elsewhere A Dog’s Purpose shook off (apparently) heavily edited video footage of an animal in distress during shooting for the second unit to post a solid $18.3 million.

The latest Resident Evil, mercifully called ‘The Final Chapter’ bombed, taking a similar amount to the last Underworld flick - $13.8 million. That number should get far healthier over the coming weeks as the series generally performs well outside of the US.

Worse off, however, was the Matthew McConaughey starring Gold, which continues a strange losing streak for the leading man - it coined just 3.47 million.
