Spike Lee has signed on to direct an American adaptation of the quirky Korean film, Old Boy, reports Deadline.

The original is an excellent, if thoroughly messed up flick, about a man who is imprisoned for 15 years on his daughter's birthday, seemingly without reason. When he manages to escape, he vows revenge on those who kidnapped his ass, and caused him to miss so much of his daughter's life. It has one of the most disturbing twists in recent memory, and one I'm not sure will translate well to an American audience. It'd also be tough going finding a leading man who'd sign up for it as is.

Will Smith and Steven Spielberg were attached at one point a few years ago, but Lee has been confirmed as the man who will be taking the helm - expect Denzel Washington to become attached shortly, so.
