G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra helmer, and generally nice chap, Stephen Sommers will not be returning to direct the recently green-lit follow-up.

According to The Los Angeles Times, there has been no comment from either Paramount of Sommers's camp about his departure from the project. The majority of the main cast are all set to come back, after Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick banged out a draft that impressed studio bosses.

The film is now being offered to other directors, with names yet to circulate. I know James Gunn is currently taking meetings for a big directing gig with his second film, Super, still hot shit in Hollywood after a successful Toronto bow. He'd be a great replacement for Jon Favreau on Iron Man as well.
