Weaver reveals much in the latest news on Alien 5, including that the instalment could see the death of beloved sci-fi heroine Ellen Ripley.

The alien ass-kicking protagonist was a key to the success of Alien, released in 1979, and its sequel Aliens, which celebrates its 30th anniversary at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con.

As told by EW, Weaver expressed excitement about the ‘great script’ the team has to work with.

She attributed delays in production to Fox’s focus on Ridley Scott’s second Prometheus film.

While her character has had quite a few near-death experiences in the franchise at this point, it would seem that this really could be Ridley’s last venture, as Weaver revealed: ‘It’s a great story and it’s satisfying to me to give this woman an ending.’

The film will allegedly be a direct sequel to Aliens, ignoring the events of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection.

That’s probably just as well as Alien 3 and Resurrection were kind of bleh while Alien and Aliens were awesome.

According to Weaver, ‘It’s a tribute to all of the great work that the other directors have done, in a way, but goes in a completely new direction.’ The script will have a great deal of ‘original’ material and reveals the backstory of the aliens’ motivations and ‘primal needs.’

The movie will be helmed by District 9 director Neill Blomkamp.

We feel pretty positive about it but Weaver also mentioned there could be more delays as she will soon be working on the Avatar sequels soon while Blomkamp’s next project is The Gone World.

Weaver said she ‘hope[s] it’ll be a couple [of years]’, which means it could be more. Guess we've no other choice...
