It's not out in Ireland until April 5th, but the early reviews for 'Shazam!' are looking pretty good.
So far, the movie currently has a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is on par with 2017's 'Wonder Woman' Both the AV Club and EW gave the movie a B rating, whilst Empire rated it four stars out of five.
Variety, in a positive review, argued that the movie "suggests that if you're taking a superhero's powers deadly seriously, you may not be totally connecting with the spirit of the comics. The movie says: You've got to giggle at this stuff. That's part of the adventure."
Den of Geek, awarding four stars out of five, said that 'Shazam!' "feels and looks like the kind of superhero movie that Steven Spielberg might have directed in his heyday, or at least produced through his Amblin banner."
The movie follows a young 15-year old orphan called Billy Batson (Asher Angel) who is imbued with the powers of an ancient wizard (Djimon Honsou) known only as Shazam. By calling out the wizard's name, Batson transforms into an adult man (Zachary Levi) who has super-strength and super-speed, electricity, and is able to leap high into the air.
So, yeah, think Tom Hanks and 'Big' - but with superhero stuff - and you're on the right track. Sounds like a winner, and if these reviews are to be believed, it most definitely is.
