Oliver Stone's begun casting for his upcoming biopic of Edward Snowden, the NSA leaker who caused huge controversies in the US and across the globe.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has signed on to play the role of Snowden. It now looks like Stone may have found Snowden's girlfriend in the form of Divergent star Shailene Woodley.

Woodley's had a decent run of starring in franchise-friendly films like Divergent and then following up with indie fare such as The Spectacular Now.

Oliver Stone will direct a script based on two autobiographies about Snowden's life, The Time of the Octopus and The Snowden Files.

Stone is no stranger to biopics of recent public figures, directing the not-as-bad-as-you-remember W. with Josh Brolin.

Production is due to begin in January in Germany with a release date for sometime in 2016.
