Last year saw the internet campaigning for Elsa from Disney’s Frozen to have a girlfriend. Now the star behind the Merc with a Mouth – Ryan Reynolds – has claimed he’d be open to the superhero that he has become synonymous with having a boyfriend in the future.

Anyone who’s seen the 2016 hit movie Deadpool will know that the titular character’s sexual preferences are pretty fluid, and in a recent interview with Variety, Reynolds was questioned about the superhero’s pansexuality.

“What love is to Deadpool may not be what love is to Batman or someone else,” Reynolds answered. “I think that could be played up more. He’s an outsider in every way, shape, and form.”

Fans of Deadpool, for which a sequel is now in the works from John Wick director David Leitch, will recall how the hero’s love for girlfriend Vanessa (played by Morena Baccarin) was his biggest driving force, and that the ending saw the pair happily reunited.

Reynolds has therefore insisted that a potential male love interest will emerge organically from the series if this is how the story develops, rather than being shoehorned in.

“The only thing that you have to consider going forward is, 'Are we being faithful to the canon that we nurtured and created?'” the actor told Variety. “One of those things is that Deadpool is in love with Vanessa. Deadpool isn't in love with Vanessa just because she's a woman. He's in love with Vanessa because he loves her.”

As we know from the likes of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, just because the relationship lasts/girlfriend survives in the first film doesn’t necessarily mean it/she will be so lucky next time. We’ll have to see what happens in Deadpool 2.
