Despite the fact that Hellboy II: The Golden Army performed very well at the box office - taking in $180 million against an $85 million budget - there's been little desire from anyone to make a third one.

Well, anyone other than Guillermo Del Toro and Ron Perlman. For his part, Perlman's been trying to get someone - anyone - to get excited about the prospect of a third one and, sadly, it's never happened. That's a hard fact to accept, but it seems like Perlman's done it.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Perlman confirmed that Hellboy 3 is pretty much dead in the water. "We don’t talk about that anymore," said Perlman. When asked why that was, the answer sounds reasonable enough. "Because he’s busy, and I’m busy. Maybe one day he’s going to call and say, ‘Hey, let’s do it.’ But for right now? We’re happy discovering new worlds to conquer."

It's a shame, really, because Hellboy was one of the few comic-book movies that seemed to have something of an independent spirit and wasn't pushing on to other stories or shared universes. It was very much of its own world and its own furrow, with less bankable but still exceptional actors involved in making it.

Jeffrey Tambor, Selma Blair, John Hurt, Doug Jones, all really talented actors working with one of the most visionary mainstream directors working today on a unique story.

No wonder it wasn't going to work.
