We can't stress how much this hasn't been confirmed, however a number of sites are now reporting that Robert Downey Jr. has signed on to star in the upcoming adaptation of Assassin's Creed.

Downey Jr. will join Michael Fassbender - who is also producing - as Leonardo Da Vinci, the Renaissance inventor / artist and inspiration for one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Fassbender, who is a fan of the videogame series, has been plugging away at getting the film off the ground and sees it as a potential franchise to match the likes of Marvel and beyond.

Keep in mind that videogames are now hot properties for film studios, what with Warcraft looking like it could be the first actually-decent videogame film.

Nothing has been confirmed regarding Downey Jr.'s involvement, however if it turns out to be legitimate, it'll be a serious coup for the production.

Downey Jr. is likely to hang up his Iron Man suit following Avengers: Age of Ultron and will no doubt be scoping out the next big-ticket franchise and this could very well be it.

Assassin's Creed is expected some time in 2016.
