Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel Studios have released details of the plot for the upcoming sequel Thor: the Dark World.
Chris Hemsworth will return as the hammer wielding hero while Natalie Portman is also set to return as love interest Jane Foster.
The official synopsis of the film is as follows 'In the aftermath of Marvel's Thor and Marvel's The Avengers, Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos... but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all'
Thor 2 will be helmed by Alan Taylor after Kenneth Branagh decided not to return. Supporting cast will also include Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgard, Idris Elba, Kat Dennings, Jaimie Alexander, Rene Russo and Anthony Hopkins.Shooting of the film began in September in Surrey with the film due for release on 8 November 2013.
