The writers of X-Men: First Class, Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, have entered negotiations to pen a sequel to one of the movies that defined the 80s and launched Tom Cruise as a brand, Top Gun.

According to Variety, Paramount are very serious about the movie happening and once again plan to work with uber-producer Jerry Bruckheimer on the film. Tony Scott and (more crucially) Cruise's involvement is yet to be confirmed, but the studio would not being going ahead with it as a "sequel" unless the star had shown some form of interest. Otherwise you'd see the word "remake" being thrown around.

Should we expect to see Maverick training guys in the Top Gun academy, while a hot shot new mini Maverick (Zak Efron, Chris Pine etc) learns from the now veteran fighter pilot? Cruise is already doing the 'pass the torch' thing with Mission Impossible, so I'll be surprised if he agreed to do something similar again. Good writers involved, when a good director is involved I'll get excited. Someone call Kenny Loggins...
