The Oscar Nominations have been announced by Best Actor winner Forrest Whitaker in Hollywood. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button leads the pack with 13 nods, while British hope Slumdog Millionaire is close behind with 10. The only really mammoth surprise was the lack of any major nominations for The Dark Knight; with the exception of the nomination for Heath Ledger in the Best Supporting Actor category, every other field in which it got a nod was technical. Is The Reader really a better film than The Dark Knight? Otherwise, Revolutionary Road picking up a solitary nom for Michael Shannon was seen as somewhat of a surprise. Well done to Martin McDonagh for picking up a nomination for In Bruges' Screenplay anyway. The Best Director battle should be between David Fincher and Danny Boyle, which is what most folk expected - and that should also carry over to Best Picture. The Ceremony takes place at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Febuary 22nd, and will be hosted by Hugh Jackman.
