Ivan Reitman has officially walked on directing the third instalment of The Ghostbusters franchise.
According to Heat Vision, the helmer of the classic original and it’s somewhat less stellar sequel will remain on board the production as a producer, but Sony Pictures are now looking for someone else to take over directing duties on the troubled sequel.
Sources are saying Reitman agreed to "step aside" for a younger helmer to take the series in a different direction. Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnisky’s script now apparently resembles more of a reboot, after the recent passing of co-writer and star Harold Ramis, and Bill Murray’s reluctance to commit to a third film.
Seth Rogen was previously linked with the film, as were some of the Judd Apatow crew but Rogen didn’t seem keen and the idea was, seemingly, knocked on the head fairly sharpish.
As for a new helmer, finding one who can strike the comedic/action balance will obviously be difficult. Ruben Fleischer did a fine job doing that with Zombieland, but Gangster Squad was a mess.
Park a truckload of cash outside Jon Favreau’s gaff and let him think about it.
