Although Jared Leto is now currently the person in the role of Joker, there's been endless rumours that Jaoquin Phoenix may take up the mantle of Clown Prince Of Crime in a sort-of-not-really separate movie about the character.

For his part, Phoenix's been pretty cool on the whole thing - going so far as to say he doesn't even know about it - but there's another person who's ready to throw on the makeup and jump into the purple suit, and he's so perfect for it that it makes us wonder why he wasn't in contention in the first place.

We are of course referring to Nicolas Cage.

Speaking to JoBlo, Cage explained that while he believes his superhero days are behind him, there's two roles in the comic-book pantheon that he'd still like to play. "I'm on to other things," said Cage, "but I always thought I'd make a great Joker and I always thought that I would've been a good villain in one of the Marvel (movies) like Doctor Doom. But, Doctor Doom you have to wear that mask, but I thought the story leading up to Doctor Doom could've been interesting. At this point if I was to go back into the format it would probably have to be as a villain."

Cage went on, explaining that Joker would give him an opportunity "to go even more off the rails than I've ever done before and, y'know, it'd be fun." Dear God, could you honestly imagine Nicolas Cage as The Joker? How nuts he'd go for it? You could argue he did something similar in Face / Off, where he was playing a maniacal crime lord with a penchant for theatricality, but this? This is on another level.

Warner Bros., if you're reading this, MAKE IT HAPPEN.
