Following Rogue One's use of CGI to digitally resurrect Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin, there were a number of rumours circulating about the fate of Princess-General Leia in Episode VIII and IX following Carrie Fisher's untimely passing.

As we reported, Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy met with Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow to discuss the future of the character some time ago and, now, it appears that one thing is for certain - Princess-General Leia will not be brought back for future films through the use of CGI.

A statement on confirmed the news, stating that "Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa." The statement also addressed the many rumours circulating and added that Fisher was "our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend."

There was something of a backlash against the use of CGI on Peter Cushing in Rogue One and, more pointedly, the digital de-aging of Carrie Fisher for the film's final scene, so it makes sense that they're nipping this in the bud here and now.
