Not for nothing, but we actually sort of broke this story about a year ago.

When we interviewed Joss Whedon for Avengers: Age of Ultron, the trailer for The Force Awakens had just been uploaded online and pretty much everyone was talking about it. We asked Whedon if he had watched it and whether he'd consider making a Star Wars film.

Whedon replied that he would, but that he'd just spent the better part of two years inside a machine, i.e. Marvel, and wanted to plough his own furrow with something different. As it turns out, that's pretty much what has people up in a tissy.

In a recent interview with Complex, Whedon pretty much repeated the same sentiments as before. When asked if he'd return to franchise filmmaking, Whedon replied that "it’s a fun thing to do, to put yourself in the service of something if you think you can add an interpretation. It’s no different than any other storytelling."

"There are some times when you get micro-managed to death but with Marvel, they let me make two movies that were very much mine. So do I want to make James Bond movie? Yeah. Anne Hathaway does Catwoman again? Sure, I’m in."

Then, of course, came the Star Wars bit that got everyone talking. "Do I want to make a Star Wars movie? Yeah. I was like, "I don't want to make a Star Wars movie. Like, god dammit, why?" But I saw the trailer for Rogue awhile ago and I was like, "I want to do that." To make a Star Wars movie and not be wed to the bigger picture."

Essentially, what he's saying he's that he'd do one and not be forced to get involved with the entire franchise like he did with Avengers Assemble and Avengers: Age Of Ultron. In a way, this makes sense as Whedon's creativity is at its best when he's allowed to take existing characters or tropes or re-invent them into something different.

Plus, the fact that Firefly was essentially Star Wars with a more heavy Western bent means that he'd be a natural for it. The question is, what character or story could Whedon tell in the Star Wars universe? For us, we'd love to see him take on Princess Leia as a teenager. Granted, Leia was already a late teen / early twenties in A New Hope, so that makes it a little difficult for casting.

The only other area that's potentially open for interpretation is something involving the Bounty Hunters' Guild in The Empire Strikes Back - that group of weirdos Darth Vader hired to hunt down the Millennium Falcon. The only standout character from it was Boba Fett, admittedly, so it's more likely for it to be a Boba Fett movie than one about the Bounty Hunters.

Whatever the area or character, Joss Whedon doing a Star Wars film seems like a real possibility now. What do you think? Could it work? Would you watch it?
