If you've been following this story - that is, Joe Pesci coming out of retirement one last time for Martin Scorsese's The Irishman - you'll know that there is nothing certain in it all.
In fact, we're not going to really believe Joe Pesci is out of retirement until we see him there and then in the film. As we've previously reported, he was in for it, then he was out, then Robert DeNiro said he was trying to convince him to do it and now, it appears as though he's on for it.
It's dubious to be sure, but an interview with Thlema Schoonmaker, Martin Scorsese's longtime editor, for Crave may have accidentally confirmed Pesci's involvement. According to Schoonmaker, the director "wants to make more films like (Silence), that are spiritual, basically, but not set in 17th century Japan (laugh). In the modern time. So hopefully we’ll be able to make that. Not the next one, the next one is The Irishman, which is De Niro and Joe Pesci and elderly gangsters."
Obviously, Schoonmaker is directly involved with the production and knows more than us. However, the last we heard was that DeNiro was working on getting Pesci back in for it and that may still be the case. By all accounts, Scorsese seemed hopeful that Pesci would be up for it and it may be that Pesci has been confirmed for it in the interim.
It's worth pointing out that Joe Pesci has not starred in a widely-released film in eleven years, turning up in Robert DeNiro's second directorial effort, The Good Shepherd. However, his last on-screen appearance was in an advertisement for Snickers. So... yeah. Who knows.
There's been no official word as of yet from Netflix - who'll be distributing the film globally - or Martin Scorsese for that matter, but it's likely there'll be something soon in the coming weeks.
