James McAvoy has said what most punters were thinking and slated the 3D technology as an excuse to charge more money. The Scottish actor spoke to Deadline.com and said:

"Thank God this movie (X-Men: First Class) is not in 3D, which is just an excuse to charge an extra ten bucks at the theatre," McAvoy said. "Then in the end, they're not 3D at all. The idea of things coming out of the screen and making you jump out your seat are done very well, but I think it's a waste of time and money and I wouldn't pay for a ticket to go to one of those films."

Can anyone really argue with him? Well, I'm sure James Cameron would try but frankly he wouldn’t have a leg to stand on. It's been proven to be a gimmick and unless Cameron bangs out a couple of spectacular Avatar sequels in quick succession then I don’t think it'll be around much longer.
