Local newspaper Kerry's Eye is reporting this morning that the seventh film to be made in the Star Wars franchise will film in the county.

Production on the JJ Abrams flick has been underway for a few months, with locations in Abu Dhabi and London acting as a futuristic backdrop for the blockbuster. Reports suggest that scenic Skelligs in Co Kerry will now also be used.

There had been rumours for some time that the production would at some point film in Ireland, but these are the first real reports of a location.

The Office of Public Works (OPW) confirmed to Kerry’s Eye this week that “Skellig Michael is being made available for a film production shoot on the island... this production is being fully supported by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the Irish Film Board”.

Exciting times for residents and Irish crew down south.
