‘Charlie’s Angels’ is making a big screen comeback and it looks like the studio behind it, Sony, has set its leading ladies.
Variety reports that the actress will be joined by Naomi Scott, star of the 2017 movie ‘Power Rangers’ and due to play Jasmine in the Disney live-action reboot of ‘Aladdin’, as well as Ella Balinska for the reboot. Balinska’s previous credits include ‘Hunted,’ ‘Tiers of the Tropics,’ ‘Casualty’ and Midsomer Murders.’
Elizabeth Banks (‘Pitch Perfect, ‘The Hunger Games’) is directing the film and will play Bosley in the movie. She previously co-starred alongside Scott in ‘Power Rangers’, in which she played the villain Rita Repulsa.
The most recent draft of the ‘Charlie’s Angels’ script is written by Jay Basu and Banks, based on earlier drafts by Craig Mazin and Semi Chellas. The plot will again focus on the Townsend Agency, which has gone global, “providing security and intelligence services to a wide variety of private clients with offices and highly trained teams worldwide.”
‘Charlie’s Angels’ was originally a TV series that aired from 1976 to 1981 and starred Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith. It hit the big screen first in 2000 with Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu playing the Angels. While the film was a big hit, its 2003 sequel flopped at the domestic box office.
The remake is set sometime after the original movies, and will focus on the next generation of Angels working for the mysterious Charlie.
It has a release date of September 27th 2019.
