Breck Eisner was confirmed a while back as the man who would be directing the remake of John Carpenter's Escape From New York, and it seems a star is close to being cast in the lead role.

Back in June, Eisner came out and said his Crazies star Timothy Olyphant could be cast as antihero Snake Plissken, which would've been fine with me as he's one of the finest, and most underrated actors working today. Alas, another man may fill Snake's boots, with the no less impressive Jeremy Renner being lined to play the part made famous by Kurt Russell. According to the folks at Bloody Disgusting, it's in the very early stages, but Renner has been approached.

Initially when the remake was announced, it was with Die Hard 4.0 director Len Wiseman at the helm, and (a hot off 300) Gerard Butler in the lead. How things change... and for the better. Renner is currently shooting Mission Impossible 4, while Olyphant is rocking TV screens in the brilliant FX show, Justified
