2016 has been a pretty bad year in general. You’d think that we’d at least have movies for a bit of good aul escapism but it hasn’t been a particularly inspiring year of films either (mind you as we get into Oscar season, hopefully this will change).

Forbes has just released the ten biggest box office flops of the year, none of which made back their budget.

If you haven’t heard of some of these, it’s because not all of them were released in Ireland.

Mind you, from the looks of things, it would seem we were spared.

10. Masterminds – Box office: $22m, Budget: $25m
Kristen Wiig and Zach Galifianakis play two cops who decide to rob a bank. Apparently not as funny as it wanted to be.

9. Snowden – Box office: $34.3m, Budget: $40m
Directed by Oliver Stone and based on the fascinating true story of Edward Snowden, the bio-thriller seemed to have the ingredients for success but apparently audiences didn’t think so.

8. Grimsby – Box office: $28.7m, Budget: $35m
Sacha Baron Cohen and Mark Strong play two brothers who, after being separated for almost thirty years, reunite to go on a spy mission. Not even a raucous scene involving elephants’ anatomy could save it.

7. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot – Box office: $24.9m, Budget: $35m
Another film based on a true story, headlined by Tina Fey, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot failed to connect with audiences.

6. Keeping Up With The Joneses – Box office: $26.9, Budget: $40m
We gave this movie one star and it would seem that audiences agreed that Keeping Up With The Joneses was just a bad movie that didn’t deserve the price of a cinema ticket.

5. Ratchet & Clank – Box office: $11.8m, Budget: $20m
In spite of being an animated family movie, which typically do well in the box office, it seemed families would rather sit through Finding Dory again than bear this video-game based flick.

4. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies – Box office: $16.4m, Budget: $28m
Did anyone get the point in this?

3. Popstar: Never Stop Stopping – Box office: $9.5m, Budget: $20m
This mockumentary followed musical prodigy Conner Friel (Andy Samberg) as he goes off the rails. It just didn’t click.

2. Free State of Jones – Box office: $23.2m, Budget: $50m
This Matthew McConaughey starrer set during the American Civil War got mixed reviews. It was also released at the height of blockbuster season and was competing with the likes of Independence Day: Resurgence, The Shallows, Finding Dory and Central Intelligence – bad timing.

1. Max Steel – Box office: $4.4m, Budget: $10m
Between Deadpool, Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad (the last two of which did well in spite of poor reviews), it seemed to be the year of the superhero movie. But that wasn’t the case for Max Steel, which was the biggest box office flop of the year.

Did you see any of them? Do you think they deserved to fail so miserably? Let us know what you think.
