The Green Lantern earned slightly less than studio expectations at the North American box office this passing weekend.

The Ryan Reynolds starring comic book adaptation took in an estimated $53 million over the weekend, despite higher ticket prices for 3D. The film has received generally terrible reviews and was expected to open with around $60 million, but word of mouth was horrible and grosses dropped off day to day. Jim Carrey also had an underperformer with his family film Mr. Popper's Penguins which opened to $18.2 million. We may be seeing a proper sequel to Dumb and Dumber sooner than anticipated...

Reynolds has a bunch of films currently in various stages of development and production and his next film is a comedy with Jason Bateman, The Change Up - due out next month.
