Godzilla destroyed the competition at the global and domestic box office this passing weekend, making an absolute fortune and pushing funding studio Warner Bros. into announcing a hasty sequel.

The film took an estimated $93 million domestically and a further $100 million plus overseas - easily surpassing its $160 million production budget. Of course a lot more would've went on marketing the tentpole, but it's well on its way to becoming a mammoth earner for Warner.

Director Gareth Edwards made his studio debut on the film, doing a solid job with the dramatic elements and delivering on spectacle; he's expected to return for a follow up in what's looking likely to be a very profitable franchise for the studio.
